Concealed Handgun Permits

NEW – Effective July 1, 2022:

The York County-Poquoson Circuit Court Clerk’s Office has launched a new program in their Concealed Handgun Permit application process called “Permitium.”  This program allows citizens to apply online for new, renewal, lost or stolen, address change and/or name change permits.

Residents who are unable use the online program may still apply in person by visiting the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office during normal business hours (Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm, excluding legal holidays).  Those applying in person must bring the proper documentation (Ex. Certification, ID, etc).  The York County-Poquoson Circuit Court is the first to launch Permitium in the area.

VIRGINIA CODE § 18.2-308

APPLICATION: Residents of York County and the City of Poquoson over the age of 21 may apply for a  concealed handgun permit by completing an application obtained online or from the York County – Poquoson Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.

 

Non-resident concealed handgun permit applications are filed with the Virginia State Police.

 

PROOF OF COMPETENCY: Proof of competency to carry a handgun is required.

CRIMINAL HISTORY: York County and the City of Poquoson have local ordinances requiring a criminal record search by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Fingerprints are no longer required.

ISSUANCE: The concealed handgun permit is issued within 45 days of the date the complete application is submitted to the Clerk.  If after the permit is issued and a criminal record search reveals that the applicant is disqualified, the permit is subject to revocation.

RENEWAL: Applications for permit renewal may be done in person – OR – via mail and should be submitted at least 45 days prior to expiration of the current permit.

FEE: The non-refundable application fee for a new permit or to renew an existing permit is $30.00.  Please see our payment policy.

LOST/DESTROYED AND/OR NAME CHANGE PERMITS: There is a $5.00 fee to replace a lost or destroyed permit, or if the permit holder has undergone a legal name change. Request forms can be obtained in the York County-Poquoson Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS:  There is a $10.00 fee for re-issuance of a permit for a change of address. Change of Address forms (VSP-248A) may be obtained online or from the York County – Poquoson Circuit Court Clerk’s Office and may be submitted to the Clerk’s Office in person – OR – via mail.
